Macy Wells – A Testament of Longevity and Enjoying the Ride
9/5/2025
NATCHEZ, MS – As long as she can remember, Mrs. Wells has been active. At age 81, she doesn’t see any need in slowing down as long as she can still go. However, she does admit she finally gave in and allowed someone to come and cut her grass, but she makes it clear she still does her own weed eating, hedge trimming and work in her flower beds.
When asked what her secret was to longevity, Mrs. Wells didn’t hesitate to answer. “I go to bed early and get up early. I eat a full breakfast every day, and I keep myself surrounded by my church members, friends and family. They give me my purpose in life,” said Mrs. Wells. “I also believe in being proactive about my health. I’ve always taken care of myself by seeing my doctor regularly and having preventive checkups throughout my life, as well as eating a healthy diet.”
When she’s not working in her yard or gathering with her friends, Mrs. Wells enjoys keeping her brain active by working word search puzzles and making pillows and curtains. She loves keeping up with the news and being informed of what’s happening in her community. “You have to keep your brain alive and alert, and I still enjoy learning and trying new things,” said Mrs. Wells.
Mrs. Wells worked at Ferriday Lower Elementary school for over 20 years, and she knew when she retired from working, she wanted to remain active. She emphasizes to everyone to stay active, get up, get yourself dressed and find something to do.
“Living a long, healthy life isn’t about any one big thing—it’s about the little choices you make every day. I try to eat well, keep moving, laugh often, and stay connected with family and friends. At my age, I’ve learned that a positive outlook and a thankful heart make all the difference,” concluded Mrs. Wells.
